I ‘Heart’ Hoboken (Vol. II)

November 1, 2012 By Katie MacLeod 3 Comments

Peace and love mural, Hoboken

A week after I wrote my little love note to Hoboken, my home from home has been on everyone’s radar for all the wrong reasons.  Like many other parts of the east coast of America, Hoboken was hit by Hurricane Sandy on Monday and has been badly affected by flooding and power outages. The National Guard arrived to assist evacuations late Tuesday night and the Mayor warned on Wednesday that the city was running out of essential supplies as power remained out to most of the area.

However, as Hoboken Girl reports, the community is coming together despite the damage. Restaurants are giving out free food while residents who do have power are opening their homes to provide charging stations for the majority who do not. Stevens students who are still on campus are helping to clear debris from park areas affected by the storm.

It was hard to see photos of the floodwaters as I waited to hear from the people I very recently left behind.  So I’m reiterating my previous post: I ‘heart’ Hoboken, and hope the Mile Square City and everyone in it gets back to business soon.

For updates on the situation in Hoboken, go to the city’s official Facebook page here.

Lifestyle blog Hoboken Girl has also been posting updates here and here.

All donations go directly to relief/supplies/etc. Thank you! #HOBOKENSTRONG

You are more than welcome! I live in the U.K. but spend a lot of time in Hoboken – I only left two weeks ago. Your blog/Facebook posts have been great in keeping me (and I’m sure many others) updated on what’s happening in Hoboken. Keep up the good work!
