On Being Anonymous in A City

December 2, 2011 By Katie MacLeod 1 Comment

An unnamed city at night

“I love the feeling of being anonymous in a city I’ve never been before” – Anonymous traveller.

Anonymity.

One of the reasons a lot of people dislike cities.  One of the reasons I love them.

Only a few days before I discovered this quote I was discussing this very idea with a local artist who was sharing a few suitcase stories of his own.  Discovering a new city is like an adventure in miniature.  Everything’s new and unknown and different.  You could meet anyone; you could be anyone.

Maybe this mindset stems from the rose-tinted glasses of the girl who grew up in the country, but I’m not so easily persuaded.  Strolling the Shanghai Bund on a Sunday morning, navigating the crowds of Kowloon in the early evening, making my way almost anywhere in Manhattan – I’ve felt that buzz in the air.  It’s catching.  A bit like the travel bug, I suppose.
